BUILDING INNOVATIVE NEW MEDICAL TECHNOLOGY BY DESIGNING IN CONTEXT

Situated right at the entrance of the LV Prasad Eye Institute's (LVPEI) GPR building, Srujana Center for Innovation is a unique in-house incubator of ideas from optometrists and ophthalmologists. I was the founding technical head of this center for two intense and power-packed years (2014-2016) where I worked with the adminstrative teams of LVPEI to build and grow this center from the ground up. My responsibilities were many and I had to wear many 'hats' during this time - managing finances, hiring a team, managing IP and engineering.

For me, the whole experience has been a challenge to push my limits and learn new skills. Starting with moving to a completely new city where a new language is spoken, to helping build an IP policy for the hospital for intellectual property coming out of our center, to coordinating the building of a brand new office space from scratch - it has been a one of a kind journey!

Hiring a team

Hiring a team

BUILDING A TEAM. BUILDING A COMMUNITY.

The first thing a bold new venture like Srujana needed was talent - engineers, designers to complement the immense clinical expertise at the hospital, through which we could realize noval innovative ideas in a tangible form. We wanted these relationships to build and persist - and open the doors to a powerful new technology vertical at LVPEI.

My task was to bring the best combination of skills into our team - I needed to find passionate people who shared our dream and wanted to learn as much as contribute to our goal. I reached out to nearby colleges, gave presentations and hired interns for the summer, winter, thesis projects as well as semester projects. Hiring full-time engineers was a bigger challenge since talented candidates had competing offers from large engineering and IT firms. All in all, I had interviewed (over phone and email) about 300+ candidates over the power-packed two years I was at this position. I got a chance to interact with some of the most enthusiastic and enterprising young (and some old!) people, and I enjoyed every moment of it!

BRINGING INNOVATIVE IDEAS TO LIFE

At the Srujana Center for Innovation, my team and I liason with clinicians to source simple but powerful ideas for revolutionary product ideas. 28 years of clinical expertise at LV Prasad Eye Institute means that clinicians have developed massive expertise and some powerful new ideas during the course of their practice and research. We incubate these ideas to prototype and testing stages by working with the clinicians, testing and iterating within the hospital network itself.

The following are some of the most successful projects I had led the development of:

Open Indirect Opthalmoscope

Folding Phoropter

Pediatric Perimeter

REACHING OUT TO TALENT THROUGH HACKATHONS AND SOCIAL MEDIA

LV Prasad Eye Institute and the camera culture group, MIT Media Lab have been organizing the "Engineering the Eye" series of healthcare hackathons since 2013. I was the chief organizer of the 2015 and 2016 edition of these workshops. I had changed the management structure of the event by delegating responsibility to summer interns and making them owners of the different project tracks - this allowed us to decentralize the management of the event and gave the summer interns a unique technology leadership experience opportunity over the summer.

Find more details of the event on the lvpmitra page and the facebook page.
